After three years of discussions and proposals surrounding the relocation of the Library from Buckshorn Lane to Cross Street, Suffolk Country Council have deemed the move too expensive.
Despite being awarded £15,000 for the relocation it was decided that extensive work would be required to the windows, doors and roof of the building (which SCC own) to bring it to the required standard.
It was also felt that the building, even when converted, was too restrictive and offered too few advantages for the project to be justifiable.
Eye mayor Linda Cummins said: “The move would have given us so little extra space that it was decided that it was not worth pursuing, but there is no problem because the county council is still going to support libraries for the future.”.
Eye Library will remain open in its Buckhorn Lane location. Suffolk County Council have stated that they have no plans to reduce library services.
