Welcome to the Town Council Website Eye Town Council is the third tier of local government and is responsible for a range of functions throughout the parish. There are 15 councillors led by a Mayor and Deputy Mayor who are elected annually (although they can serve for more than one term). There are elections every four years with vacancies in the interim either filled by a by-election or co-option.
The current Mayor is Merlin Carr. Councillors can be contacted through the Town Clerk, Sarah Foote in the first instance. You can use the council contact form to do that if you like.
The Town Council has a number of assets it is responsible for. The largest by far is the Town Hall (see the ETHIC section on the web site) and a caretaker is employed to cover the day-to-day activities and maintenance. The Council also looks after the Victoria Mill Allotments, the Cemetery (off the Magdalen Road) and, because it is full and unable to take new burials, the Churchyard. The Council has taken on the responsibility for the Skate Park at Town Moors and the Pocket Park at Oak Crescent. The Town Council has also made an agreement with the District Council and taken on the employment and management of the Street Carer to keep the local streets clean as well as running the Public Toilet in Cross Street.
The Council’s budget does include a small amount to use as donations for groups societies and events that benefit residents. The Mayor will also hold a small fund to support local charities and similar activities.
Each year the Council seeks nominations for people to receive Civic Awards – certificates recognising action that has benefited the people of Eye. This are normally presented at the Annual Town Meeting. The Annual meeting gives a chance for the Town, District and County Councils, local charities and groups to report on the activities through the previous year. It is normally held in the first week in May. Again, if you like to nominate someone for this award, use the contact form to let us know about it.
Council meetings are open to the public and there is normally a formal period when members of the public can speak. They are held in the Council Chamber in the Town Hall on the third Wednesday of every month (except for August when there is a recess) starting at 7.30pm. An agenda will be posted for all meetings on the Council notice-board at the Town Hall. Standing agenda items include a report from Eye’s District and County Councillors and the Suffolk Police and a monthly snapshot of the Town Council’s accounts.
