Martin Sixsmith’s story is a sincere and harrowing true story. It tells of a search by single mother (Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) for her long lost son, Anthony. Set in mid 20th century Ireland, he was taken away from her and she was banished to an Irish convent to work in the laundry for four years. The entrenched attitude of the Mother Superior was made worse by the sale of the child to a wealthy American couple.
After fifty years, Philomena decides at last, to tell her story to reporter Martin Sixsmith (played by Steve Coogan). The story then heads to the United States and then back to Ireland……
