“Johnny Dowd is like some self-mutating virus of American music, restlessly bringing fresh twists to old forms, absorbing influences.”
—The Independent (London)
Ever since Johnny Dowd made his first record in 1998, “Wrong Side of Memphis,” he has been the alternative to the alternative. He has walked a twisted path through nearly every genre of American music. Each of his dozen albums has been an equal mix of Hank Williams and Captain Beefheart. Along the way, he has collaborated with artists as diverse as Jim White and The Mekons and toured with Neko Case and Beukorkest.
His new record, which will be released in March of 2015, “That’s Your Wife on the Back of My Horse,” harkens back to “Wrong Side of Memphis.” Johnny goes back to basics, plays all the instrumentals himself and uses the same analogue 70s drum machine he used on “Wrong Side.” Anna Coogan’s melodic vocals provide a perfect counterpoint to Johnny as he visits his usual musical haunts. This may be his best and most consistent record yet. It’s dark, and it’s funny—it’s Johnny Dowd.
In April of 2015, Johnny will tour Europe. He will perform solo, but this will not be an acoustic singer/songwriter show. Expect a full-on sonic assault—drum machine, guitar loops, synth sound played live—a captivating combination of low-fi and high-tech.
