Gas network Cadent has now restored gas to most homes and businesses in Eye, Suffolk. Some 680 properties of the 800 that lost gas supplies have now got gas back on. A further 100 have been visited but no-one was home. Cadent engineers were visiting residents until 11pm to switch their supplies back on.
They will return tomorrow, from 8am, to restore gas to those people not in tonight. If you haven’t had your gas switched on yet, please arrange for someone to be in. Please don’t switch your own gas back on – wait for an engineer to do this as checks will be needed to be made to ensure all gas appliances such as cookers, boilers and fires are working safely and correctly.
Those people in vulnerable situations such as those who are elderly, chronically ill, have disabilities or babies and very young children were prioritised as the first to get their gas reconnected. Among the first to get supplies restored were two care homes and the hospital.
Homes and businesses lost their gas supplies after a third party damaged a high pressure gas main at an industrial estate at Eye Airfield on Monday (12 November).
Additional engineers and support staff from across the country have been drafted into help ensure supplies are restored as soon as possible and residents are asked to be patient. All our engineers carry ID badges and people should inspect these before allowing anyone into their property.
Work is also continuing to repair a gas main supplying properties on the industrial estate. This is expected to be completed tomorrow, after which businesses on the industrial estate have their supply restored.
People are reminded that with the temporary loss of gas supply it’s also very important not to overload the electricity network and people are asked to use electricity wisely and to avoid using too many appliances at the same time.
A customer centre has been set up at Eye Community Centre, 23 Magdalen Street, Eye, IP23 7AJ, where people can get information and advice, alternatively they can call 0800 389 8000 (This number is manned between 8am and 8pm).
All customers in vulnerable situations , for example elderly people, those who are chronically sick, people with disabilities, families with babies or very young children, that we have been made aware of, have been visited to ensure they are getting appropriate assistance. These customers are having their gas supply restored first. However, if you know of someone in a vulnerable situation and you are concerned please contact 0800 389 8000.
