Warning after bogus ‘police officer’ scams pensioner

Police are again urging people to be vigilant after a pensioner was conned out of thousands of pounds while another had a ‘lucky escape’ by men posing a police officers.

On Monday 20 October, an 81-year-old woman from the Bury St Edmunds area was contacted by phone by a man claiming that he was a police officer. He said that someone had tried to access her bank account and she would therefore need to withdraw the cash so that it could be checked. Read more →

An Update on the Future of the Post Office in Eye

The Town Council hosted a meeting on the Future of Eye Post Office on the 8th of September at the Town Hall.

The Mayor opened the meeting by explaining how important the Post Office was to the neighbourhood of Eye. The 61 members of the public who attended the daytime meeting demonstrated the strong community support for the Post Office. Gary Herbert the Senior External Stakeholder Manager East of England represented Post Office Ltd at the meeting.

Gary Herbert assured everyone present that Post Office Ltd was totally committed to a Post Office in Eye. He also stated that the Seeley’s had done an excellent job in running the Post Office in Eye however Mr Seeley had tended his resignation due to recent events. Read more →

Gypsy and Traveller Site on Eye Airfield Stopped

Below is a short statement from Suffolk County Council on behalf of Suffolk Public Sector Leaders:

“The public consultation seeking people’s views on where to create three official Gypsy and Traveller short stay stopping sites in Suffolk has been stopped.

“The consultation, launched last week, identified seven potential sites – with the aim of selecting three in the areas where unauthorised encampments usually occur. However, following a number of landowners coming forward with other potential sites and early feedback from councillors and residents, Suffolk’s council and policing leaders have decided to halt the current process to enable it to be reconsidered. It means the seven sites previously identified have therefore been dropped and a fresh list of sites will be worked on prior to public consultation. Read more →

Eye scouts unveil brand new £140,000 hut

The 1st Eye Scout Group have officially opened their new £140,000 hut as the grand culmination to a five-year fundraising effort.

Money was raised through a combination of increased membership numbers, community events, grants and donations, enabling the group to replace their previous building, which had become run down having first opened around 50 years ago.

The new hut contains a large hall, meeting room and other facilities and is intended to be used by community groups and for special events, in addition to scout activities.

20 mph Speed Limit will be coming to Eye

In order to further our campaign to improve the historic Eye Town Centre, county Councillor Guy McGregor attended a meeting today at Suffolk CC HQ @ Endeavour House.

We are pleased to report that the Policy Development has accepted our representation and will be recommending that a 20 mph maximum Speed Limit  Zone be set up. The Zone will cover most of the Conservation Area of the Town Centre.

Guy McGregor said “ This is a part of the Campaign to make Eye Town Centre and even more attractive place to shop and to do business. Many of our excellent shops deserve a higher footfall. Other improvements to the built environment will follow”.

Weight Watchers in Eye raise £500 for Charity

Weight Watchers members in Eye have managed to raise £500 for charity go Diabetes UK after a sponsored walk through the town.

The group, made up of all ages, walked distances of between one and five miles through the town also raised a further £200 through a clothes sale and baking day. Well done to all involved!
